Election Day 2007

What to do? I don't have a local Green candidate, and I'm pretty
unhappy about detention of asylum seekers, ID cards, Trident, nuclear
power, the M74 extension, megacasinos…

Labour says they will
invest in Life Sciences and other key industries. They will raise the
school leaving age to 18yr, unless someone goes into a recognized
training programme or job. Not sure how that will work, will that not
just encourage absenteeism? They will go for more community policing
(but so will everyone else).

They will publicly identify sex offenders who give rise to concern!!

Libdems
will make schools community centres for the young, esp in the evenings
and weekends.  They will double overseas aid.  They will give tax
rebates to homes with micropower!  No new nuclear power.  Against dawn
raids and ID cards.  But they want to cut business rates, and change
council tax to an income tax.

Power Inquiry (chaired by Helena Kennedy) into political representation
and the reasons for poor election turn outs.  Key recommendations:
Donations on political parties to be capped at £10,000
A "voter vouchers" system, where individuals indicate if they wish to allocate £3 of state funding to a particular party
Voters given the chance to put forward laws
The voting age, and the minimum age where people can stand for Parliament, to be reduced to 16
A 70%-elected House of Lords
Monthly logs to monitor ministerial contact with companies, lobbyists and pressure groups
Restrictions on the powers of party whips
