A weird story, kind of topical.
Easter is the first weekend after the first full moon after the spring equinox. In the early days of Christianity, deciding which was the right weekend was tricky and contentious. So it was eventually agreed on by the Synod at Whitby in the 7th century.
This was the time of the Sutton Hoo burial – great wealth was starting to be seen, international trade was growing. Whitby was a great monastery established by St Hilda, part of a whole East Coast thing. Hilda, apart from being a woman, was also a key figure because she was close to the Celtic church (which had an important base at Iona, from where St Aidan came to establish Lindisfarne) as well as the Roman church.
