Multilingual children and literacy

Findings support “the importance of environmental print for young children [eg] in shops, waiting for the tram, at the zoo and in the park. These included photos of signs, books, DVDs, maps, posters, brand names and graffiti.”

“The amount of popular culture texts Lucy is using at home, such as magazines, toy catalogues, and computer games was one of the main findings. This coincides with other research conducted in the areas of popular culture.”

“Lucy’s literacy is developing in a broader way due to her multilingual experiences. The evidence lies in her ability to code-switch between languages to rhyme, code-switching whilst speaking to others and code-switching in her own writing. Also, it is demonstrated through her interest in the differences between the letters and sounds amongst her languages.”
