The Self Made Man

From the Art of Manliness blog
Industrial capitalism brought with it the male archetype of the Self Made
Man.  It posits that anyone from anywhere, with effort and a bit of luck,
can make it good in the world.  It’s an attractive narrative, yet it
undermines the daily grind of people just trying to get by, and ignores the
sociological truth that your background/class/race/etc are highly predictive
of your future.  It is also a fickle, external standard by which to judge a
person.  It also makes people more competitive and less likely to
collaborate or play a social role.
The other (American) male archetypes suggested are the Genteel Patriarch and
the Heroic Artisan.
