by Dan Plesch. Good title, but disappointingly not much humour.
a) Control the corporations by removing limited liability. Limited liability means that if your company gets sued, you can only lose what you paid. It was intended to encourage enterprise, but of course what it means is that companies chance a lot and never really pay the consequences.
b) Reduce dependence on oil. Politics governed by it, military budgets are controlled by it, gives inordinate influence to Arab states and makes economy vulnerable. Besides global warming.
c) Weapons of mass destruction. After decades of effective arms control and disarmament, Bush wants to throw it all away (refuses to sign treaties on Space weapons, biological weapons, landmines, etc), we have more superpowers than ever, and more potential for conflict than ever. MAD (mutually assured destruction) doesn't work if there's more than 2 players, missile "defence" is clearly an act of arms proliferation. Taiwan could be the flash point – US has promised to protect it from invasion, but China can now take out US satellites. Japan could take the nuclear option. There is lots of experience, wouldn't take much to build confidence in Kashmir, Korea.
d) Protect and celebrate democracy. We prefer war heroes, tales of kings and queens. Where did our rights come from? Magna Carta, Levellers, Chartists, Suffragettes, Thomas Paine. Reform systems that no longer give us a choice, or any power to change anything.
All good stuff, not always well explained.
