From Goal-free living, by Stephen Shapiro.
You answered "agree" for question #1 — I am in awe of how incredible
my life is. This is higher than average. This is good. However, most
people have convinced themselves they are happier than they really are
because they do not know what is possible. So, consider that your
rating is somewhat inflated and that there is even more room for
improvement. Regardless, loosening the grip that goals have on your
life may help you have a happier life. Below is your score for
questions 2 – 10
Your goalaholic score was 51 out of 90 (ideal range is between 15 and 29)
BORDERLINE:
It isn’t too late for you. While your goals have given you direction
and you haven’t let them totally dominate your life, there is room for
significantly more passion.
- It may be worth your while to do a bit of
spring cleaning and toss those goals that no longer bring you joy and
passion today! - Do not let yourself get too embroiled in one particular
avenue (e.g., buying a house, obtaining a specific job, getting a
promotion). Instead create many options for your future, diminishing
the inevitable frustration and disappointment that comes from placing
all of your eggs in one basket. - Try new things, explore new interests,
and meet new people. - And while you may be tempted to take on goals that
appease others, do not do this at the expense of your own happiness. - And be careful not to impose your goals on those around you, especially
with those you love, since you are particularly susceptible to thinking
that you are “only doing what is best for them”.
