Science vs policy

David Nutt, chief drugs advisor to the government, was dismissed in November for his stance attacking government policy, specifically the reclassification of cannabis from C to B. This increases the potential jail sentence for possession from 2 to 5 years, and moves it out of the group including ketamine and GHB into the group with ecstasy and amphetamine. Nutt's position was that despite the increased risk of schizophrenia in an at risk minority, there was no evidence that classification had an effect on usage. Other issues are whether private use constitutes a public harm; that alcohol is almost certainly more harmful in social terms, and possibly also in medical terms; that issues of criminalization distract from the management of addiction.
